Fox News, Conservatism and Misogyny

Fox and Friends with Gretchen Carlson
Why do conservatism and misogyny so often go hand in hand?
Gretchen Carlson, formerly of Fox News, is suing the conservative network for sexual harassment.
She says that her “Fox and Friends” cohost, Steve Doocy, saw her as little more than a blonde prop. Instead of treating her like the intelligent and educated (Stanford and Oxford) journalist she was, he engaged in sexual harassment and belittled her during commercial breaks. Cindy Crawford Brings Men Pleasure; Women Pain
Women have mixed feelings about nearly-naked Cindy Crawford.
There is appreciation: “Attractive… sexy… love her!”
But also animosity (“F-ING ANNOYING” anyone?). And she makes a lot of women — nearly half — feel bad about their bodies.
Straight men, on the other hand, felt (no surprise) mostly pleasure.
But not all of them. Read the rest of this entry
Men Wanting Magnetic Power Over Women
If you’re straight, at some point you realize that,
The opposite sex has enormous power over you. They can break your heart, control your actions, completely dominate your thoughts, and (let’s be honest) basically turn off your brain.
So says Noah Brand.
He makes me think of guys who have complained on my blog that women don’t find men attractive. And they yearn to weld the same magnetic power over women that women have over them. Read the rest of this entry
Must Sexual Orientation Be Biological?
Cynthia Nixon of Sex and the City fame announced that she chose to be gay. And she caught hell.
I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line ‘I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and gay is better.’ And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me.
Some critics insist she is a biologically-based bisexual.
Others come to her defense. Read the rest of this entry
Signs of an Abuser
One of my students recently wrote about her relationship with an abusive man. Amber’s ex-husband, “Dan,” fits many of the signs of an abuser.
An abusive man often takes his victim on a whirlwind ride of a relationship. He’s in a rush to make her fall in love so that he can begin the abuse sooner rather than later. And, she gets so attached that it is hard to leave. Read the rest of this entry
Women Are More “Visual” Than Men
They say “men are visual” but women are not.
After all, the “women’s magazine,” Playgirl went bankrupt even as sales for “men’s magazines” like Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, Barely Legal… were through the roof.
And men are much more likely to watch Internet porn.
Yet when it comes to visual stimulation and casual sex there is an irony, says one of my readers, Jean Claund: Read the rest of this entry
Why Degrade Women? It’s Insecurity
I’ve written a lot about frat boys degrading women. A quick sampler:
- Dartmouth frat names and demeans women the brothers had sex with
- Duke’s Alpha Delta Phi and Sigma Nu issue Halloween invitation to sorority “sluts, bitches, witches” — sprinkling the overture with supplementary disparagements
- Yale’s Delta Kappa Epsilon chanted, “No means yes! Yes means anal!” around the women’s dorms
- San Diego State frat boys screamed obscenities, threw eggs, and waved dildos at “Take Back the Night” marchers
Smells like insecurity Read the rest of this entry
Hillary Clinton Makes History
Today is an exciting day for me.
At last a woman has become the nominee of a major political party. And Hillary Rodham Clinton is one of the most qualified people to ever run for President:
- Secretary of State
- Two-term Senator
- First Lady of the United States and Arkansas — and an important adviser in both of those roles
Hillary also recognizes that Donald’s,
“Make America great again” catch-phrase really means “Take America back to the bad old days.” Read the rest of this entry
Pro-Sex vs Anti-Sex Societies
Gender-equal societies are more likely to celebrate both life and sex.
Dominator cultures are more sex-negative — especially for women. And they are prone to celebrating suffering and death. Read the rest of this entry
Charming & Cruel, A Classic Abuse Story
By Amber W.
I started casually dating just to get my feet wet after the divorce.
I met a couple of nice men, but no spark. Then I met “Dan.”
Dan was charming, funny and good-looking. We could talk for hours. And, he was a successful and celebrated Silicon Valley engineer. Read the rest of this entry
