Mammary Glands Deserve Respect – Along With The Rest Of Us

Julia Cahill, "Breasts in the Press”

Julia Cahill, “Breasts in the Press”

My mammary glands are complex and they deserve respect.

So says artist, Julia Cahill. “Breasts in the Press” is her commentary on their over-sexualized media image. And what better musical accompaniment than her rewrite of the black-eyed peas, “My Humps,” she adds?

Too often over-sexualization leads women and girls to become victims. Kelly Blevins’ “Ghosts” takes us there. Describing her painting she explains, “The hand of a ghost across the neck represents physical, mental and emotional abuse and how it becomes a permanent imprint in us.”

Did You Score Last Week?

couple in bedHow many times did you have sex last week?

If you are a 20-something American, the longer your relationship the more times you probably “did it.”

Sociologists, Mark Regnerus and Jeremy Uecker studied young US adults for their book, Premarital Sex in America. Among other things, they wondered how often couples had sex.

Check out these numbers: 63% of couples who had been together at least four months got it on at least twice a week. That number bumped up to 72% if they’d been together seven months. After a year, 80% got laid at least once a week.  Read the rest of this entry

Do Women Objectify Men?

Men in thongs

Men in thongs

When I talk about objectification, every now and then someone — it may be either a man or a woman — protests that:

  • Women do it too!
  • Women check out men!
  • Playgirl exists!
  • Young girls love teeny-bopper Tiger Beat
  • Etc.

Gender MashUp at Anime Conventions

smash 2!!!By Demon Ted

Wanna see a gender-bending mashup? The world turned round? Or at least halfway around? Then check out an Anime Convention.

Anime is Japanese cartooning — a stylized way of drawing that appeals to every gender. At the conventions fans dress as their favorite characters. It’s called “cosplay” from costume + play.

The conventions are remarkably egalitarian, and possibly tilting toward matriarchy.

Girls Hit On Guys Like (Some) Guys Hit On Girls

Luckily, most men already know that when approaching a woman you’re interested in, the best move does not involve leering, catcalling, groping or acting the know-it-all.

Here’s a video for those who don’t. Reversing sexual come-ons:

Also, The Guardian’s Leah Green reverses gender roles in London. Each gender-flipping encounter is based on real experiences women have tweeted about on @EverydaySexism, a project chronicling women’s everyday encounters with sexism.  Read the rest of this entry

She Doesn’t Want To “Do it”

Libido_490X327Some guys complain that women won’t do things that men want, sexually. Or worse, they aren’t into sex, at all.

They grumble after I’ve written something like this:

A woman explains, “A lot of guys have come to expect the ‘Porn-Star Experience’ … A few women might enjoy it, but for most it’s harrowing.

Sasha Baron Cohen Foils Tough Guise

Cohen arrives for the Australian premiere of his new film "Bruno" in SydneyBy Hansel Choi

Growing up in a boy’s school I sometimes succumbed to hyper-masculine poses. Yeah, that was me, along with plenty of other guys. Silly, overblown showcasing.

And then I grew up and wondered why. Why do we do it? Why do we do it even for strangers we don’t know or care about? People we’ll never see again?

After taking some gender courses, I’ve got some clues.

Growing up there’s plenty of pressure from dads and moms and friends. But it’s more like the pressure of “how not to be.”

Don’t be fem. Don’t be gay.  Read the rest of this entry

Ritual Degradation & Male “Superiority”

Taking the walk of shame.

Taking the walk of shame.

“No means yes! Yes means anal!”

That’s how the boys of Yale’s Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) serenaded the women’s dorms and the campus Women’s Center a couple years back.

Another frat had pledges shout epithets at young women returning to their dorms each Sunday morning.

Not so long ago Dartmouth’s Zeta Psi was shuttered for publishing a newsletter that named and derided women who had sex with fraternity brothers. It also promised “patented date-rape techniques” in a future issue.  Read the rest of this entry

Equal Marriage = Less Sex?

porn-for-women[1]Does an equal marriage mean less sex?

Maybe you’ve seen studies suggesting this unhappy possibility.

When men do feminine chores like laundry, cooking and vacuuming, couples have sex 1.5 fewer times per month on average, compared with more traditional couples. But when men stick to masculine duties like fixing the car and taking out the trash, women report greater sexual satisfaction, on average, according to University of Washington sociologists.

These findings disappoint progressives and cheer conservatives. And go against feminist expectations that men will get more sex when wives are less worn out.  Read the rest of this entry

No GOP War On Women?

GOP war on women

GOP war on women

Republicans deny waging war on women.

Well, how about the list below, which includes cuts to life-saving programs that mostly affect women.

Too many Republican legislators have:

  • Voted against equal pay for women
  • Sought to make miscarriage subject to criminal investigation
  • Sought to make women’s health insurance cost more than men’s
  • Cut funds to women’s clinics that screen for STDs and cancer of the breast and cervix
  • Insisted corporations should have more rights than women, when it comes to contraception. Even though it is women’s bodily and financial well-being that are at stake
  • Insisted that women seeking abortion undergo a vaginal probe — mirroring sexual assault
  • Refused to consider rape or incest, or a women’s health or life, when legislating against abortion
  • Said stupid stuff about rape, like insisting that it can’t cause pregnancy

Meanwhile, Paul Ryan’s budgetRead the rest of this entry
