1st Woman President Won’t Be Inaugurated Today
When I was a girl growing up in Iowa in the 1950s, my parents and teachers told me, along with the boys, that when I grew up I could be whatever I wanted to be, even President of the United States.
In my world, adults told the truth, or what they thought to be the truth, and I believed them. Read the rest of this entry
Sources of Power in Relationships
There are many sources of power in relationships, but a few stand out:
1. Higher education, income, and occupational status, especially in marriage relationships when men make more money. Both partners tend to feel that a man should have more say since he contributes greater resources to the family.
When wives are economically dependent and fear they can’t support themselves, husbands can become especially powerful. Some abusive men purposely get their wives pregnant (by destroying their birth control) to increase their wives’ dependency – and their control over their partners.
Women are less likely to become more powerful than their husbands when they make more money because most don’t like feeling like they are emasculating their partners. Read the rest of this entry
Anorexia: Physically and Spiritually Dying
I wouldn’t sit with daddy when he was alone in the hospital because I needed to go jogging;
I told Derek not to visit me because I couldn’t throw up when he was there;
I almost failed my comprehensive exams because I was so hungry;
I spent my year at Oxford with my head in the toilet bowl;
I wouldn’t eat the dinner my friends cooked me for my 19th birthday because I knew they had used oil in the recipe;
I told my family not to come to my college graduation because I didn’t want to miss a day at the gym or have to eat a restaurant meal.
I would swear I did not miss the world outside. Lost within myself, I almost died.

“Last Tango” Director Must Be “Free” To Rape
Last Tango In Paris director Bernardo Bertolucci helped Marlon Brando rape actress Maria Schneider in the film’s infamous “butter” scene.
In a graphic assault, Brando used a stick of butter to anally violate Ms. Schneider, who learned about the scene just before doing it: Read the rest of this entry
Men Needn’t Hate Pretty Women
There must be a lot of men who hate pretty women because Google constantly brings them — or people who want to understand them – to me via this post: “Men Who Hate Pretty Women.”
They come, and they say things like this:
Beauty makes me extremely angry, so much that I can’t stand to look at beautiful women in the street … She’d want somebody taller, richer, more muscular, more handsome, more whatever it is that women want.
Hillary Did Win the Popular Vote
I am a Hillary Clinton supporter and very excited to vote with my grandmother, who is 93. Just 3 years before she was born the US granted women the right to vote. She is also excited to vote for the first female president and is delighted with how far our world has come.
That’s from Maddy, one of my students.
Hillary Clinton may not have broken the Presidential glass ceiling, but she did make history. Read the rest of this entry
Relative Deprivation and Trump Appeal
Most people would choose a 3000 sq-ft. house over a 4000 sq-ft. home — if that’s the only way that their house could be bigger than everyone else’s.
That may help to explain Donald Trump’s appeal.
The white working-class (Tump’s biggest supporters) have plummeted in relative status over the last 40 years.
Their wages have languished or fallen even as minorities have gained ground — threatening white privilege and dominance, points out Thomas Edsall at the New York Times. Plus, the buying power of the top 10% has kept many goods and services beyond their reach, he adds. Read the rest of this entry
Language Can Make Women Disappear
- Europeans play football
- Americans play baseball
- Australians are bear-drinking surfies
A few years ago (when both language and culture were more sexist than today) Dale Spender asked some teens to play a game. She made statements like those above and asked if they could guess the rule behind the game. Girls were quicker to catch on:
You pretend you’re talking about everybody but you don’t. It’s only men.
Basically, they were using language to make women disappear. The boys had a lot of fun with this game.
Until she changed the rule. Read the rest of this entry
