Am I “Doing It” Right?
HBO’s “Girls” is an exploration of young women’s sexuality today, so I was struck by a scene that the New York Times’ Frank Bruni described as being all about what “he” wants “her” to do:
(“Hannah’s”) back is to her boyfriend, who seems to regard her as an inconveniently loquacious halfway point between partner and prop, and her concern is whether she’s correctly following instructions.
‘So I can just stay like this for a little while?’ she asks. ‘Do you need me to move more?’
Witch Burning = Misogyny
Last October, my neighbor stretched synthetic cobwebs among the branches of her tree. Against this creepy backdrop, she hung a broomstick and a badly made female figure, clearly a witch. The sight made me wince.
How did we evolve to find this display lightly amusing? Our forbearers did hang women from trees.
Sexy Men Can Seem Gay
Imagine men in Speedos plastered all over billboards, drawing your attention to this product or that.
Sexy? Or does it seem kind of gay?
A lot of women think it seems kind of gay. But why is that? Read the rest of this entry
Taylor Swift V Ryan Adams: Who Wore It Better?
Ryan Adams totally copied Taylor Swift’s “1989” album — including the title. And now there’s controversy over to who deserves credit for the “depth” and “complexity” of Adams’ cover?
Okay, Ryan didn’t merely copy her. He did bring his own style to her music and lyrics.
But really? Maybe he deserves ALL the credit for his album’s profundity? Read the rest of this entry
Sex Objects Who Don’t Enjoy Sex
Sexual objectification can have its perks in the bedroom, with breast fetishes and butt fetishes heightening men’s arousal.
But surprisingly, it can have the opposite effect, harming both men’s and women’s enjoyment. And in many ways. Here’s one: self-objectification. Read the rest of this entry
How Sex Creates Gender
Sex — the verb, and everything surrounding it — helps create gender.
Like when some guys discourage other guys from relationships, and pressure random sex.
What’s that got to do with gender? What it means to be a woman or a man? Read the rest of this entry
Feminism Is Good For Men, Too
Gender equality is good for men — and for everyone, says CUNY Professor, Michael Kimmel, expert on men and masculinity, and all-around good guy.
Check out his TED Talk. (I summarize his main points below — and add a few of my own.)

Planned Parenthood Saves Lives
Defund Planned Parenthood to save lives?
That’s what folks — perpetually intent on promoting unplanned parenthood — claim. Because 3% of the services PP provided last year were abortion-related (but not government-funded). And some folks trust hoaxes staged to make PP look bad.
Yet the anti-PP folks don’t really care about saving lives.

Back to School, I Mean Rape Culture
As college women returned to school this fall, some were welcomed back to rape culture.
A few college boys who haven’t yet grown into man-sized shoes unravelled banners shouting:
Freshman Daughter Drop-Off
Hope your baby girl is ready for a good time
Go ahead and drop mom off too Read the rest of this entry
Patriarchy Drains Our Confidence
By Kloranne Kambou
Like some Westerners, a woman in my country — the Republic of Congo — may see a man as a financial plan.
Maybe that’s not surprising since our culture lifts men above women and gives us fewer opportunities.
When a woman births a boy she gains respect. He will become head of his own family — which he will rule and provide for. Only boys can pass on the heritage of their fathers.
Growing up, I saw women arise early to do laundry, cook, clean and work in the fields. Men slept as long as they wanted. When the men finally did wake up and come for breakfast, they were served first. They were also served first for every other meal.
