Fox News, Conservatism and Misogyny

Fox and Friends with Gretchen Carlson

Fox and Friends with Gretchen Carlson

Why do conservatism and misogyny so often go hand in hand?

Gretchen Carlson, formerly of Fox News, is suing the conservative network for sexual harassment.

She says that her “Fox and Friends” cohost, Steve Doocy, saw her as little more than a blonde prop. Instead of treating her like the intelligent and educated (Stanford and Oxford) journalist she was, he engaged in sexual harassment and belittled her during commercial breaks. Brock Turner, Omar Mateen and the Domination Mindset

pyramid

Yearning to be on top.

Brock Turner and Omar Mateen both share a domination mindset.

Brock Turner

  • Men dominate women
  • Turner raped a female acquaintance. Because men have a right to control women’s bodies
  • Research ties rape to a belief in male superiority and entitlement
  • Turner has promised to fight “promiscuity,” which really means “promiscuous women.” People don’t worry much about “promiscuous men.”

Why Degrade Women? It’s Insecurity

frat rape culture 3I’ve written a lot about frat boys degrading women. A quick sampler:

  • Dartmouth frat names and demeans women the brothers had sex with
  • Duke’s Alpha Delta Phi and Sigma Nu issue Halloween invitation to sorority “sluts, bitches, witches” — sprinkling the overture with supplementary disparagements
  • Yale’s Delta Kappa Epsilon chanted, “No means yes! Yes means anal!” around the women’s dorms
  • San Diego State frat boys screamed obscenities, threw eggs, and waved dildos at “Take Back the Night” marchers

Smells like insecurity Read the rest of this entry

Empathizing with Rapists Instead of Victims

Brock Turner

Brock Turner

Why do we so often empathize with the privileged even when they commit brutal crimes?

Rape is just “20 minutes of action.” And it’s non-violent.

That’s how the father of convicted rapist, Brock Turner, saw it.

Judge Persky was also blinded to the victim’s pain by the predator’s distress.  Read the rest of this entry

Demeaning Women? It’s Tradition

Fighting fraternity rape culture.

Fighting fraternity rape culture.

Why are frat boys — the ones who belong to dangerous fraternities, anyway — so intent on degrading and intimidating women?

I suspect the behavior comes partly from inheriting a culture that benefits the “haves” over the “have-nots.” And partly, insecurity at the cusp of manhood.  Read the rest of this entry

Fraternity Female Degradation Ceremonies

End the violence against women!

End the violence against women!

In college I grew to hate frat boys. They didn’t always deserve it, but too many did.

At San Diego State “The Daily Aztec” reported on a fraternity accused of shouting racial epithets at strippers. Read the rest of this entry

If She Was Drunk, Did She Rape Herself?

drinkingIt’s almost universal that gang rape victims are intoxicated, and for some reason when alcohol gets involved, a drunk woman did it to herself.

Virtually Attack Women, But No Nudity

Boys playing video games.

Boys playing video games.

A gamer creates an avatar resembling himself and plots to kill a three-dimensional, lifelike woman. The avatar grasps an axe and raises it to strike. He hears the thud as the axe slices her head. He hears her cry out in pain. He sees her split skull and feels the sensation of blood on his hands and face.

I’ve just paraphrased one part of Supreme Court Justice, Samuel Alito’s opinion on whether video games of this sort should be protected as free speech in sales to minors.

Yes, he uncomfortably concludes. Read the rest of this entry

You Can Help Stop Super Bowl Sex Trafficking

Super Bowl sex trafficking

Super Bowl sex trafficking

By Courtney Cooper and Wesley Russell

This originally appeared in the San Jose Mercury News on January 20, 2016.

Sara Kruzan grew up with an abusive, drug addicted single mom. By age nine she was depressed and attempting suicide.

At age eleven she met an affectionate 30-year-old man who seemed to be the loving father figure she had yearned for. He said she was special. So special that people should pay for the privilege of having sex with her. Eventually, he had her walking the streets every night from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. In between displays of affection he terrorized and raped her to keep her in line.  Read the rest of this entry

Why Does Mayor Blame Assault Victims?

Henriette Reker, Mayor of Cologne, Germany

Henriette Reker, Mayor of Cologne, Germany

Why would Henriette Reker, the mayor of Cologne, Germany, blame women for being sexually assaulted?

You’ve probably heard about Cologne’s New Year’s Eve celebration, where groups of men — maybe more than 1,000 of them — surrounded individual women, groped them and stole their belongings. There were at least two rape accusations.

Yet the mayor merely told women to keep more than an arm’s length away from men? That’s hard to do in a congested square, where people are pushing to get in.

Or, maybe women should just avoid crowded festivities altogether? Read the rest of this entry
