Progressives Move Country Right

Circular firing squad

Circular firing squad

Since DJT’s election I’ve heard plenty of protests.

Well deserved, given the racism and misogyny that so frequently spews from his mouth… or wherever.

But I am also angered by the number of protesters who didn’t even bother to vote.

Or who voted third-party. Read the rest of this entry

Winning Isn’t Everything, Donald

Donald Trump as a boy.

Donald Trump as a boy.

When Donald Trump was a little boy his dad told him – on a regular basis – that the world is divided into winners and losers, and the Trumps were winners.

Little Donald seems to have taken the lesson to heart. He has striven to prove his winning ways to himself and to everyone else all his life.

But does winning bring happiness? Read the rest of this entry

Hillary Did Win the Popular Vote

Hillary Clinton breaks Presidential glass ceiling!

Hillary Clinton breaks Presidential glass ceiling! I wish!

I am a Hillary Clinton supporter and very excited to vote with my grandmother, who is 93. Just 3 years before she was born the US granted women the right to vote. She is also excited to vote for the first female president and is delighted with how far our world has come.

That’s from Maddy, one of my students.

Hillary Clinton may not have broken the Presidential glass ceiling, but she did make history. Read the rest of this entry

Please Take Away His Twitter

Uh, that should be thumbs down on Twittering Trump.

Uh, that should be thumbs down on Tweeting Trump.

I’m too tired to wait for final election results so I’m posting my blog with the expectation of very bad news in the morning.

I “get” the electorate’s impulse to lob a Molotov cocktail into a dysfunctional system that serves only the elite.

I just hope we don’t blow up our entire democracy. Read the rest of this entry

Why Would My Friends Vote Trump?

Vote!

Vote!

Most of my friends can’t understand why anyone would vote for Trump.

Some of my other friends are actually voting for him.

Since I have a hard time getting my head around this I asked them why. Here’s what they said:

Big Money Drowns Out Citizen Speech

End legalized bribery.

End legalized bribery.

By Georgia Platts, John Fioretta and Derek Cressman

Money talks, and big money in politics is drowning out the speech of ordinary citizens.

When wealthy interests give large campaign contributions they let politicians know what they want. And they usually get it.

It may not be formal bribery but it sure looks like it.

Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page are political scientists from Princeton and Northwestern University who in 2014 compared the preferences of ordinary voters and economic elites with 1,779 actual policy outcomes.  Read the rest of this entry

Relative Deprivation and Trump Appeal

Donald Trump

Donald Trump

Most people would choose a 3000 sq-ft. house over a 4000 sq-ft. home — if that’s the only way that their house could be bigger than everyone else’s.

That may help to explain Donald Trump’s appeal.

The white working-class (Tump’s biggest supporters) have plummeted in relative status over the last 40 years.

Their wages have languished or fallen even as minorities have gained ground — threatening white privilege and dominance, points out Thomas Edsall at the New York Times. Plus, the buying power of the top 10% has kept many goods and services beyond their reach, he adds. Read the rest of this entry

When people hate on Hillary I ask why.

The complaints are often curious:

Trump Controlling Women’s Bodies

Reproductive rights. Religious right.

Reproductive rights. Religious right.

Many on the religious right are pro-Trump even though his life is not right religiously.

He’s bragged about enjoying plenty of casual sex. He’s even boasted about sexually assaulting women. And some women have filed lawsuits that sound exactly like the assaults that he has described making. His first wife said he raped her once (later taking back the claim).

Why do so many religious conservatives still back him?  Read the rest of this entry

Trump: It’s Only Words

Trump at the second debate.

Trump at the second debate.

Trump insults women and others but his actions are to the contrary. He hires women on an equal basis, like his daughter Ivanka and his campaign manager Kellyanne Conway. He’s more bark than bite.

That’s from one of my readers.   Read the rest of this entry
