Combating Patriarchal Knuckleheads
Standing eighteen years young, yet old enough to pretty much understand the essence of life on Earth, I’ve come to the solid conclusion that we live in a pretty damn androcentric society.
Androcentric: Seeing through a male perspective. Valuing men and masculinity over women and femininity.
The words “since the dawn of man” (which excludes women) fit all too well.
Am I right?
Take male trolls on the Internet, for instance. Read the rest of this entry
Feminist, Malala
Patriarchal terrorists are scared of girls.
Especially educated girls.
And most especially Malala Yousafzai, who promotes girls’ education. So they put a bullet through her brain.
They say God does not like knowledgeable girls.
But Malala’s miraculous recovery just might indicate that God is on her side. Read the rest of this entry
Is a C Cup Too Small??? !
I read somewhere that most women who want breast augmentation ask for a C cup. But an awful lot of surgeons convince them to get D’s. Or the doctors simply give them a bigger size than they had asked for.
Denise Richards, actress, model and one of Charlie Sheen’s ex’s, said that when she was 19 years old a doctor put in bigger implants than she’d asked for.
Actress, Tara Reid, has a similar story:
I was 34B, but the right one was always bigger than the left. He gave me C’s, and I didn’t want them. At all.
Another woman wanted a breast reduction and lift. Her doctor mostly did “lift”: Read the rest of this entry
Language Can Make Women Disappear
- Europeans play football
- Americans play baseball
- Australians are bear-drinking surfies
A few years ago (when both language and culture were more sexist than today) Dale Spender asked some teens to play a game. She made statements like those above and asked if they could guess the rule behind the game. Girls were quicker to catch on:
You pretend you’re talking about everybody but you don’t. It’s only men.
Basically, they were using language to make women disappear. The boys had a lot of fun with this game.
Until she changed the rule. Read the rest of this entry
Makeup Makes Me A Bad Feminist?
I stopped wearing makeup in graduate school.
I’m not alone. Of my professors mentioned that women grad students almost always stopped wearing makeup.
I suppose that a made-up face makes women feel less serious. And less feminist.
After getting a PhD in sociology I started teaching women’s studies — the feminist arm of academia.
And not long after, I started wearing makeup — some of the time. I like to mix it up.
Why did I start again? Read the rest of this entry
A Girl Who Was Raised Like A Boy
By S. Abu-Coush
Men are men and women are women?
We don’t learn to be. We just are?
But I didn’t learn gender the way most girls do. And even less the way most Middle Eastern girls do.
And I don’t see myself the way most girls do, either. Read the rest of this entry
Grandpa Told Grandma: “Make a meal for my mistress!”
One stormy night as my grandmother, aunts and uncles all slept, my grandfather crept into the house with a dead cow.
He jostled my grandmother awake and told her to help him unsaddle his horse in the middle of a Mexican rain storm.
Afterwards, per usual, he demanded she remove his muddy boots.
What followed, however, was not usual.
After drying off he told my grandmother to skin the cow and cut it up for consumption, with no time to waste.
His intention, he said, was to take the meat to his mistress. He laughed at the humiliation of his demand. Read the rest of this entry
Gender Inequality Emerged From Agriculture?
The world wasn’t always marked by sex inequality. Particularly in plant-based societies there is much of evidence of parity.
So what happened?
No one knows for sure since we have no clear record of the transition — which may have occurred in different ways in different places. But based on archaeological, historical, and anthropological evidence, we have a few theories. Read the rest of this entry
Men Can’t Resist Groping Sexy Ladies?
I have seen enough groping/skirt lifting on crowded buses/trains, outside night clubs, etc. of scantly clad women to say that, yes, when there is no security around and an aroused guy feels he can get away with it he will act… It’s just human nature.
That’s what D. Jalbert told me.
Yet groping is not about short skirts or low-cut blouses. Read the rest of this entry
