Notorious RBG

Notorious RBG — aka Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg — has been a radical just by being herself.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg had dreamed of being a first-rate lawyer, but that just wasn’t possible in 1959 — even though she had graduated from Columbia Law, tying for first in her class. Law firms just couldn’t wrap their minds around a woman being anything but a secretary or a mom, it seems.

That left her no choice but to burst bombshells.

So say her “Notorious RBG” meme creators, and biographers, Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik.

With her soft-spoken, tidy and conventional ways, Justice Ginsberg looks nothing like a bomb thrower, says friend, Cynthia Fuchs Epstein.

Plus, she’s good friends with extreme right-winger, Justice Antonin Scalia. Their families sometimes have dinner together.

What 'chu talkin' bout, Scalia?!

And, her revolutionary goals came via careful, incremental plans.

Like this:

Years before sitting on the Supreme Court, RBG appeared before it battling gender discrimination by … (drum roll) … advocating for MEN’s rights…

…Which later left the court little choice but to also defend women’s rights.

RBG enjoys quoting the Preamble to the Constitution:

We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union.

But, she points out, “We the people” originally left out a lot of us: American Indians… slaves… Black people… herself.

Notorious RBG’s life work has been that struggle to include us all.

She’s a fighter. A couple of years ago Justice Ginsberg felt faint while working out with her trainer, and she was sporting a stent in her right coronary when the “Notorious R.B.G.” creators met with her and asked what message she could relay to her young admirers. RBG said:

You can tell them I’ll be back doing push-ups next week.

  1. Highly inspirational RBG is, Georgia, and a role model as well for both genders. She is a perfect contrast to the biblical Ruth.

  2. I love her! Such a badass.

  3. Am definitely a fan of hers. I love that she’s become so iconic not just in her work but in the culture.

  4. While I do love and appreciate RGB (she’s my favorite Justice), I do think that because she an older woman and a Supreme Court in today’s world she is viewed as radical by those that oppose her. I think that if she was the same person but younger with a less powerful job, those oppose of her might be less harsh on her. If so, it is quite a shame.
